BM Onboard prores encoding adds sharpening. Red adds no sharpening to the r3ds.

Could it be the absent of a OLPF filter makes the BMPC4K sharper?

Yes, that's pretty much why. Edit: also, Epic's larger sensor makes it appear softer, deeper depth on the smaller sensor tends to appear sharper.

I've never heard of any additional sharpening in camera, unless he means ProRes spec includes sharpening, which I've also never heard of but could be.

We had an Canon 16-35mm / 2.8 on the RED and needed to stop it down to around f8-11.
The BMPC had the "better" Tiffen IRND Filters and the Sigma 18-35mm / 1.8 @ around 5.6-8

The Canon L Zooms are more "creamy" than the Sigma lens.

But don't look to close at the sharpness. The RED could easily sharpened to the same level with the RAW
controls. Technically the RED has no Problem to keep up with the BMPC.

Great footage, it looks stunning. However, I can't believe the black spot is still there

RED for me based on that. But that's just my instant preference based on movement.

On RED, prores is sharpest when recorded off board, rather than transcoded in post from the r3ds, if the r3ds are untouched
