I was thinking about this and how possible/plausible it is. Since an LF camera is inevitable at some point...and the UMP line is already so established...I'm wondering if a sensor upgrade plan could be done. Using the new electronics of the G2 which could possibly take advantage of the LF sensor. Using the UMP line BMD dont have to redesign or reinvent the wheel which would help keep costs down. Customers send in their G2 and they swap the sensor at a cost lower than having to pay full price for a new camera (like RED).

    Things to consider:

    1. However being that the G2 is already pretty affordable I dont know if it makes sense economically for BMD to do this.

    2. They can hardly deliver normal cams fast enough so this would put more pressure on them...ie this may take forever.

    3. Is there physically enough space in the current UMP to house an LF sensor.

Maybe Blackmagic might revisit the swappable sensor option but with a new body?

Have you guys forgot the URSA Turret fiasco already? They can't even get the new pocket battery grip out. This is just wishful thinking.

From what I have managed to learn thus far, BM seems to be using available processors and their matching chipsets and writing firmware customised to unique sensor and processing chains. Swapping another sensor type in without changing the actual processor and chipset might not be a workable option when everything is built into very few individual pieces. That seems to have been demonstrated by the 4.6K URSA turret debacle. Even the original "big" URSA, which was slightly more modular than later offerings, could not be made to work to a merchantable standard.

Considering the current state of a dead sensor meaning buying a new camera as repair is not practical, I'd assume just prepare to buy a new camera.

    Doubt it.

    Look at the economics.

What is the price of any Red sensor upgrade ?

So the BMD upgrade program gives you a brand new LF Ursa and you get to keep your old Ursa for less than a RED sensor upgrade ! Winner !!

All very valid points...some of which I touched on. Just wanted to throw it out and see what you guys were thinking. And yes a RED upgrade is usually more than the cost of an UMP so that def makes more sense when it comes to them.

Maybe a sensor module with all the vital components that can be attached to different modules for controls, screen, etc. Like the "Craft Camera"

Ha..ha... yes the ultimate in modularity by folks who can really create awesome and convincing motion graphics presentation.

Rumors has it that RED was behind it but it also feature the rubber pull out bits on the sides typical of Blackmagic.
TBH RED would have charged many times more and sliver/grey is not their thing.
