Mark Wyatt talks about using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. ‘Nature’ is Mark’s test of the camera’s 4K performance in the extreme lighting conditions of rainforests and ravines.

“The camera tests I wanted to do were in the forests and waterfalls on the outer West Coast of Canada. I was really interested in seeing how the new sensor would handle these harsh lighting conditions. By increasing the ISO to an impressive 1250 and 2500, it allowed me to capture the dark moss-lined walls and unique emerald color, yet also hold onto the highlight detail of the top of the waterfall and sky. I feel most cameras would likely struggle with this scene.”

“I had the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for only a few days, but overall I was really impressed by it. The weight of the camera is very liberating, especially when you are used to using larger camera systems. The screen is big and bright enough to use in daylight, which I found great for judging focus and exposure. And, the colors too on the screen, were also nicely represented. In fact, I would argue it is Blackmagic’s best screen yet.”

And that's with YouTube's compression. Pretty sweet stuff.

I'm wondering about Mark's process when exposing for ISO 1250 and 2500, because I'm curious about the highlight retention for some of those backlit shots. Did he set the camera to those ISOs or did he manually expose for them while keeping a lower ISO? Maybe I read the charts from NAB 2018 wrong, but I was under the impression that the 4KPCC switched to the second gain stage for any sensitivities above ISO 800, which seems counter intuitive if you're trying to protect your highlights. Here's the chart I'm referring to:

Maybe 1250 is still below the threshold of the second gain stage though, or maybe everything has changed since NAB and there are a few more settings we can adjust when it comes to the gain staging of the camera's sensitivities. Otherwise, I was impressed with the detail, colour, and quality of the shots--especially the contrasty ones of the waterfall. Definitely looking forward to stress testing my 4KPCC when my pre-order arrives.

If the camera was set at 1250 and 2500 there must be intermediate steps and not just full stops as on that chart. This will be the first BM camera with gain on the sensor, so will be interesting to se what it does with that in ProRes vs raw.
